5 Reasons to Move Abroad Now
I think everyone should live abroad at least once in their life. I was lucky enough to live abroad first as a child, and that set the stage for me wanting to travel more as I got older. And the overwhelming feeling of wanting to experience new cultures. Living abroad as an adult has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life thus far. Here are my, "best" reasons to go abroad.
1. To learn a new language.
There are a ton of people who move to another country and don't learn any of the language. Which is quite sad in my opinion. Learning a language is not just about being able to communicate with the local people. It is the gateway into getting into the local culture, being able to see and understand things from another person's perspective.
And other interesting things start to happen when you learn a new language, your brain starts to change, you use your own language differently, you start to describe things in new ways. There are words that cannot be translated to English because there is no equivalent. You can literally see the world differently through a new language.
2. Embrace a new culture
How do prejudices come about? It's fear of something unknown right? Fear of something we don't understand. How could a group of people do something in a certain way that is so different from the way we do it??
One of the best reasons to move abroad is that through embracing new cultures, it helps to erase our prejudices of the world, of people. It helps us to understand why people might do things differently, and that doing things differently than what we are used to, does not make it wrong.
You might even figure out that some of these things you thought were crazy, might turn out to be pretty amazing once you try them out.
3. Seeing new places
Of course one of the best benefits of moving abroad is being able to see some incredible things. Good, bad, and ugly. But most of the time good. Seeing new cities, new landscapes, new architecture.
Plus, depending on where you go, its usually easier to travel from your abroad country, to other countries in the area. That means, easy exposure to even more countries and cultures and sights.
4. Challenge yourself / Get out of comfort zone
Through all the difficulties that come with moving abroad, you will grow, and find out what you are made of. If you think it is easy to pack everything up and go to a new country, you are wrong. The country will not be holding a welcome party for you, with banners and streamers, chanting U.. S.. A... U..S...A... !! It is damn difficult to get a working permit, let alone a residence permit. And usually takes around 3-6 months or longer to complete to process.
Through the process, you will have a test of your patience, phone skills, paperwork filling out skills, waiting skills, perseverance skills, and finally when you feel so frustrated that you want to go back home, you will get the okay that you can stay!
Not only the challenge of getting to stay in the country, but the challenge of learning the language, of making new friends, of figuring out "how things work" here, of understanding the culture better. All these things will push you right to the end of your comfort zone, and then beyond it. And that pushing is what will help build your character, and turn you into a better human being.
5. Because you are craving something more from life.
This was my ultimate reason for moving abroad. I had this feeling deep down, that there was something more for me in this world, other than the life I had in the USA. I had this need to get out and see things, to get more from life.
And every new experience, new language, new country, has helped to fill this void. Going abroad is in my opinion the best way to get more out of your life. Save up your money, pick a place, and try it out. Don't wait any longer, start working towards it, and it will happen!
