Goethe C1 German language exam

C1, that's right, at this point im nearly qualified as a native German speaker! (Yes- I passed!) Ha... can you believe that!?? Not that I feel anywhere close to a native speaker though. There is only one test higher than the C1 German language exam, the C2- which I have no plans of taking right now.

So down to the test. It consists of two sections, the speaking part and the written part. The written part is divided into three sections, reading, listening, and writing. Between the two sections you have to get a minimum number of points in both to pass the test, with a combined point total of 60 out of 100.

Let's be very real. This test is HARD. This was one of the most difficult tests I have taken, and I have taken a lot of tests. I walked out of the test with my brain going in circles and totally exhausted. From what I've heard, a lot of German people couldn't pass the test without studying for it. What makes it so difficult? Partly because on the written section the majority of the answers are fill in the blank. That means you have to find the correct word and put it in the correct grammatical format. There are only a few multiple choice.

I had private lessons from two different people beforehand- I would say I prepared deliberately for the test about 3 months ahead of time. I also had a study guide, the same one I had for my B1 test, both the exercise book and the test book this time. Which were both very helpful as well.

I found the writing part the most difficult. Speaking and listening were easy for me, since I am doing that everyday at work already. And the reading part was okay as well. I am so thankful that I passed, because I walked out of the test filled with dread, because it was so difficult I just didn't know what to think.

My suggestion for this one, don't just walk into it thinking you will pass. Prepare, prepare, and prepare some more. Get an instructor, you will need help! And if you don't already talk daily in German, start talking as much as you can. Good luck!
